Extra Certification While In School

By Jesse Hodes, Campus Representative, Kansas State University

After four years, you are still in a similar position as you were as a Freshman in college (or so it seems). Although it seems you spent hours upon hours doing homework and studying for exams, a lot of times things that you once thought were important seem almost unnecessary to recruiters in their search for strong candidates. In a recent article found on suite101.com, Alison Diefenderfer provides students the opportunity to see some ways to get ahead and be proactive early in their collegiate and academic careers. One of these suggestions was particularly relevant:

"Although there is always the option of going back to school for additional training, it is often cheaper to work on certificates or minors before graduating. Teaching certification takes less time to work towards if one enrolls in a dual bachelors-masters program or a bachelors-certification track than it does if one majors in a non-education major and then decides after graduating that teaching is the right career track."

Being proactive and getting on top of things earlier in school is not only the best way to prepare for job applications, but it is what sets us students apart from others. Certain certificates that are offered by universities and this specific company are often overlooked as students continue through college.
